Default dead short

I have a dead short in my tail lights on my 1985 C4. The fuse pops very fast and is warm to the touch. My dash is also on the same cricuit. I had the dash rebuilt a while back. Is it worth taking the dash apart to unplug the cluster? Everything works fine for a few seconds before it shorts out. The dash comes on as do the tailights. Has anyone has a simiklar experience or any suggestions? thanks....Jim

The way I'd proceed would be to dig out the owners manual and look up everything that is on that circuit. Unplug everything you can find on that circuit and try it. If the fuse holds, start plugging things in one thing at a time till the fuse blows again. Could be just a bad bulb or socket. Could be a pinched wire.

I'd take out the bulbs in the tail lights. Then see if the fuse blows.

Check to see if somebody installed an incorrect bulb in one of the taillight sockets. If they installed a single-contact bulb into your dual-contact sockets, it could short the hot lead to ground.

Be well,
