Default Burning rich

I have been burning rich on the right hand side for some time now. The honey comb seems to be gone on the cat and I am getting a code H64 intermittently. A code 64 means it is burning lean but the sesnsor is covered in black sutt. Can a faulty O2 sensor cause the ECM to add fuel? Also, is there a method of checking the sensor once it is out of the car? Thanks.

I had the same problem you describe. It turned out to be a faulty O2 sensor. The soot, in and of itself, doe's not necessarily mean it is bad, but does tell you that your rich. And yes, a faulty O2 sensor can feedback info. that cause one bank to run richer...

Take a look at my plugs, and guess which bank was running rich:

You durn right, a faulty O2 sensor can cause the ECM to control fuel one way ot the other. You can test it while it's in the exhaust. It measures the amount of O2 in the exhaust stream and sends the info to the ECM to control fuel delivery, along with other sensors. I don't think testing it outside the exhaust will give a true reading. In the exhaust with the engine running (exhaust temp 600* and/or engine temp 140*....closed loop). .1v being lean and .9v being rich with .45v being a good A/F mixture but will vary every second.

Or try switching the right to left and vise versa to test before buying a new one.
