yesterday i was on my way to work everything was working fine. i stopped at my shop for a few minutes then went on to work. while i was crossing the san mateo bridge i noticed it felt like my old 4 speed when the clutch first started to slip. i drove it real easy so as not to do any more damage. through traffic 1-2 sahifts nice and firm(manually shifting) 2-3 was real soft, i had to pay close attention to the rpm's to make sure it would lock up. it was real hot that day and i thought(hoped) that the heat had something to do with it. after work when it was cool, i took off. 1-2 firm, 2-3 a little slipping but could maintain speed as long as i didn't jump on it. by the time i got back to the bridge it was slowly getting worse. i could downshift to 2nd it would lock up normal and i could get back up to speed shift to 3 but could not maintain speed. : i made it to the off ramp and my shop was less than a mile. i used 1-2 and couldn't tell there was any problem. i was thinking it was my 3-4 clutch pack, but hoping not. does anyone have any ideas of anything else that could cause this?
thanks for the reply pete. when this goes, is it something that goes out on it's own or does it take out a bunch of other stuff with it causing more damage?
It typically smokes the clutches and steels in the 3-4 pack. Usually quickly. They you lose 3-4 completely. Does not normally tear up too much else. Nothing that is not handled during the rebuild anyhow.
any idea what a rebuild goes for nowa days? i seen a company on ebay offering rebuilt trannys, 700r4's, i think it was about $750.00, free shipping, no core charge. 1 year warranty. have you heard any info on the quality of these rebuilds?
he goes by monster transmission and performance. thanks again pete.

Check parts sale section, u will find it just dont ignore pete's capability on 700R4. Here is mine pete rebuilted:
Just buy his tranny and when u get chance rebuilt ur's, infact u dont another tranny after u bought from pete, it will be ur last tranny purchase for another 100k miles. Iam waay much happy with his tranny.

And thanks sami, for the kind words. Sami has been my most recent spokesman lately. Poor guy went thru 6 or 7 of them before we built his. Some, if I recall, weree e-bay purchases. I am sure he can provide details privately. He is not the type to bash anyone. For the record, the 86 I am selling is a good trans. Sami has more that double that in his unit I assembled for him. His is built to the hilt. We spared no expense to give him the specific parts and shift qualities he requested.

I cannot farly comment on the companies on e-bay. I have read about good and bad for most of them. I have no first hand experience, so I cannot comment fairly. In my area, labor rates are between $50 and $75 per hour for mechanics labor. A typical c4 vette trans rebuild here is between $1,700 and $2,200. This would be for a stock overhaul, removal and replacement and a new(stock) remanufactured torque converter. Taxes, fluid and other misc fees would be included. In my area, no one will do a high performance rebuild.I would have to drive 100+ miles for this. This is part of the reason I started doing them. Friends and family are dragracers. The 86 trans I am selling is a stock trans with mild upgrades.
yes, sami sure does speak highly of you. great complements like that from people you deal with mean alot more, in my opinion, than an ebay sales ad that someone wrote up themselves. i was really leary about going that route.
