Default How do I remove my shift ****?

I have a 1985 auto vette and I'm curious as to how the shift **** is unfastened. I want to replace the old shift **** and boot, and I figured asking you guys is a lot better then getting frustrated and damaging the plastic trim. Does it just pull off or is there a bolt somewhere. Thanks a lot for any help.

Default Shift ****

Here's what I do on my 89 Vette with automatic transmission, to remove the shifter ****.

Gently pry the rear most edge of the plastic thumb release with a straight edge screwdriver. It should pop out quite easily.

Snap ring pliers are needed to remove the ring inside the ****. Again, easy does it.

Gently pull up on the ****. Not too hard or you'll end up socking yourself in the jaw

Voila!

Hope that helps.

Jim

After you get the **** off you will have to pull the console cover to get at the bolts holding the boot in.

My good snap ring pliers did not have a reach long enough to get down in there. I had of get out my junky set which did have a longer reach. Otherwise it would have been ice picks, alls and jewelers screwdrivers.

Does anyone have a source that sells aftermarket shift ***** for the automatic transmission? I have only been able to find one place and they only had 2 *****. One was woodgrain and I can't remember what the other one looked like.
