Will a 700 R4 out of a Third Gen Firebird fit into my C4?

physically? yes

tailshafts are vastly different. you must use your old one

governors are different

servo is different

only the vette 700R will allow WOT in 4th gear. this is again an easy fix to swap in the vette parts

so to answer your question now in a short version...

yes it will fit, but they are still vastly different

Thanks for the reply. This is a rebuilt tranny that has all the Vette parts inside it. So basically all i need to do is swap tail shafts? Are all the electronics the same??

Thanks

The tail shaft is 3/4 inch longer in a non vette trans. The tail housing is simple to swap. The tail shaft is not. The electronics are not the same. GM used approx 15 different wiring arrangements regarding the lock up.

If I have both trannys can i swap over the parts? Or is this going to be a nightmare to do? Has anyone on this board done this before?

I have just finished putting a 90 comaro 700R4 into my 90 corvette with no issues. Swapped the tail housings and the speedo gear. Peice of cake. Just check your yoke in the rear tail housing to see if it fits up tight and you will be good to go. Don't know much about firebirds.

The entire transmission must be disassembled to reach the c clip that holds the output shaft in. If you are comfortable tearing down the unit, no big deal. If you have never been in an auto trans, you don't want to tear into a 700r4 for your 1st time. Depending on the year of the trans, lock up normally switches right over.

Why does the Tail Shaft need to be swapped?

I do not know what years you are talking about. I had an '87 GTA and had the 700R rebult. The tranny guy said the pre-1988 700's cannot be built as strongly as later years.:o

The vette tailshaft is 3/4 of an inch shorter than the f-body. Some guys claim that it will work and not bottom out in the vette yoke. On the 3 that I have attempted, it has always NOT worked. Also vette uses a different hole for the drive (speedo) gear in the tailshaft. Remember to move it or it will chew up in the first couple of miles.

He is mistaken. It sometimes is not cost effective to do it, but can be done.
