Default ZF Question

I was under the impression that there were two ZF's. An early (90-93) and a late (94-96). The later not being as strong do to a redesign to quiet it down. Last night I was informed that there were indeed two but not as I thought. This chap stated that all small block ZF's were the same and that the one for the ZR1 was different. Anybody know for sure? Thanks, Frank

ZF 6-speeds began in '89.

And while I can't confirm this I seem to remember that the earlier ZFs (perhaps up to '92?) are the more robust ones.

I also don't think there is any difference between a regular ZF and the one's they put in the ZR1 but again, I'm not 100% sure.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. ;)

There are, indeed, 4 different designs for the ZF6. I'm not sure on when they made the change, but there is a difference. The internals are identical between the ZR1 ZF's and the standard ZF's.

L98/LT1 Early production-'90 to about '92 - Square-cut gears. Noisey and stronger.
ZR1 Early production thru about '92 - Same square-cut gears. Shorter input shaft.

LT1/LT4 Late Production '93 - '96 Change of the angles on gears to quiet down the growl - not as strong.
ZR1 Late production '93 thru final production - same gears as above but with shorter input shaft.

Cool. Thanks.

So I've got a strong but noisy ZF.
