I have a stock 92 with 100k on it. I have been noticing that the engine has been ticking a little bit. It's not constant, but usually after driving for a little while or after driving hard. I notice it mostly when I put it in park- it will start ticking and then get quiet.
I took it to my local Chevy dealer and he said a lifter is sticking and had me run 2 tanks of gas with fuel injector cleaner to see if that helped. It's still ticking so here are my questions...
1. What should I expect to pay for this? Ballpark
and
2. If one is bad, would it be good to have them all replaced while they are at it? - If it doesn't cost that much.
Really not that hard to fix. I wouldn't let the GM dealer fix it if he told you to run fuel injector cleaner for a sticking lifter! Change the oil and go made some hard runs. Sometimes that helps get them unstuck.
I would assume the reason the dealer told him to run fuel injection cleaner is because he thought it could have been a clogged injector. Ijector fluid and lifters don't have anything to do with each other.
I'm not really sure about the L98, but in the LT1, the lifters are fairly easy to replace. Just take off the intake and they are right there.
I replaced the lifters in my car when I did my cam for no other reason than I wanted to. I can tell you that it's a fairly simple job. You will have to remove or loosen very much the rocker arms so you can remove the pushrods, then the lifters will just pull right out. You then have to re-adjust the valves, it would be a very good time to go with some roller rockers, if for no other reason than they are easier to adjust with less mess. You should probably replace the springs as well, they are supposed to get weak around 50k, at 100k it wouldn't hurt to replace.
Anyway, I got the top of the line Comp Cams Pro Magnum lifters, they were about $200 for the set.
Lifters $200
Springs $100
Rockers $300
New Pushrods $36 (not required, but while you are in it, why not)
Valve Seals $20 (not necessarily required, depends on the springs, and again at 100k miles it wouldn't hurt)
For a little over $600 you can have an all new top end, it can be done in a day, but allow yourself two or three.
Re: Ticking from engine- Lifters? (Nathan Plemons)
Where did you get new pushrods for $36? I paid $140 for mine! I sure hope you got hardened ones if you bought aftermarket.
As far as the topic goes, make sure it is not just injector noise. However, if it does not do it all the time, it could very well be a lifter going out.
Re: Ticking from engine- Lifters? (Nathan Plemons)
Wow, thanks guys! I really feel that I get better answers here than from any mechanic I have talked to so far.
I think I might get a set of Comp Cams Pro Magnum lifters but I don't have the money to get all the other stuff right now. Plus, I am not doing it myself so I have to figure in the cost of labor.
There was a bulletin sent to the dealers concerning the lifters in the 92 LT-1's they reccomended changing them and warned this may occur. If i remember right it was something with the seals if the engine sat too long. they changed the lifters and cam in 93. I would change them its real easy to do.
Yeah, everything I listed is kinda a "while I'm into it" kind of thing. You might seriously consider some springs though. It shouldn't take a qualified mechanic long to do and they are probably worn out. People have gained back 10 or more hp just be replacing worn out springs. If you still have the stock cam and such you would be fine with stock springs, which should by no means cost $100.
It wouldn't hurt to ask your mechanic what he would charge to do it anyway. If it's too much then don't do it, but at least ask, what would it hurt?
I started the vette on Sat. mornin, car was cold and heard my noise
again.I slid under pass. side and beat on the pre-cat with my hand
and guess what ,IT GOT LOUDER!! Seems to be something loose inside there.
I would hit it repeatedly an dcould make it sound like whatever i wanted to.
I thinking i have found my prob. Just keeping everyone updated!!
Hope this helps--Now how to fix this annoying problem for good??
Matt
The saga continues!!!! Jacked up car and the clamp on the exhaust was
loose! This was just past the pre-cat,it is holding a 1/2" tube that runs
to the main converter. On top of that, the heat sheild in the same area
was missing a screw and moving around as well. I do believe that between
these two that the noise will be gone!!
I hope your problem is as easy as mine to fix. I also posted at my intermittet
clacking noise as well.
