Default bad opti pics

My bad opti symptoms were rough idle, low rpm miss, then a high rpm miss when you really got on it that cut power and made it seem like when they press the pit speed limiter button at Indy...sort of a smooth, rapid, chatter. This got worse and worse in a short period of miles (100 or so) until you could barely step on the throttle without causing severe knock. Heck, even turning on the A/C at idle would cause knock, according to the datalog. Threw no codes btw.

Installed a new Gen I Dynaspark, and as Richard Petty used to say..."man, what a diffeernce!!!"

Just got around to dissassembling the old one. Has 44K miles on it, and never wet to my knowledge. However, changed plugs in an effort to find the problem and found they were almost double gap (due to missing AC Delco pucks), which probably induced way too much voltage for the opti to handle, causing it to arc.

Here's the pics. Third one clearly shows where it looks like the rotor was dragging across the plastic but the rotor itself shows no signs of that. So I figure that's where the worst of the arcing occured. Neat stuff. A real eye-opener taking this thing apart.

Thanks for sharing the pix. Looks to me as though the unit did have moisture inside of it. Probably was simply condensation that accumulated over time, and failed to escape, as was very typical of the Gen-1 Optis, in which the passive venting (weep holes) just didn't do the job.

Good to hear the Dyna got your LT1 back into the pink.

Be well,

SJW

Also clear evidence of minor oil seeping in, dunno how that affects optis but can't be good.
