Default Changing water pump on lt1

Well I just rolled 80k on the 94 and I started it and moved it ten feet and coolant starting coming out of the weep hole on the water pump. I have a buddy that used to work at a GM dealership coming to help me, but are there any important things I need to know, I dont have to much faith in this particular dealership...

It's a pretty straight forward change. Just remember to transfer the drive coupler to the new pump.

The stupid coupler has a groove around it. The groove side goes to the block. It will go back on either way but for some reason the groved side goes to the block. I pulled mine apart and noticed the groove when putting it backj together and it was a p.i.t.a. trying to get an answer on which way the grove goes.

Is it very difficult to get to, I have changed the water pump on my buddys L98, how much different is it from that, other than it being gear driven, should I take a whack at it myself or wait for help?.

You'll need a swivel to get one of the bolts out. Will have to swivel through the power steering pump's pulley.

Oh, there are 6 bolts.

Not much different than the L98, just be carefull with the coupler, and make sure you don't leave it on your core (yeah, I've done it!)

It's pretty easy, I don't remember needing a swivel. Some teflon tape for the coolant temperature sensor and a thermostat gasket will be needed though. The thermostat doesn't use a gasket on the housing just a rubber o'ring around the thermostat itself. A new thermostat might not be a bad idea either just make sure you get one for a LT1 they are different.

Really ? I bought a Cartex pump and I had to pull my old housing and it didn't come with a thermostat either. For the money it should have

I think it is much easier to remove the power steering pump pulley. It also helps make a little more room to scrape the old gaskets off which was by far the worst part for me. I had to remove mine anyway because the back of the socket caught it as I was backing out the hard to reach bolt and bent the pulley. It is hard to see the gasket faces to scrape them. I used gasket remover spray and a single edge razor blade very carefully. It also takes a few times to bleed the air out of the system and get the temperature to behave normally. Also, very interestingly the Haynes has much better info than the factory service manual (by far). Good luck.

Heres a bottom view of my old one. It leaked intermittently, but especially after the car had set for a week or two. It had only 30k miles on it !
