Just recently i started to hear this noise from the
pass. side of the engine. When i start it in the garage the
sound is much more noticible. It sounds like a lifter but as you rev the
motor it will seem to go away. The oil pressure is at about 50psi when
cold, about 42psi when at cruising speed warm. I tried changing the oil and
filter, but still sounds the same. After i drive around a little bit i do not seem to hear it at all. Could this be a collasped lifter?? Never heard one before,so i do not know what i should hear.Kinda sounds like someone who plays spoons as an instrument.Best description i can think of!! The car has about 65k on the odometer.Any ideas as to how i can test the lifters without teardown??
Should i keep driving it?? I can do the work myself,so that will not be a prob.
Suggestions for a fix appreciated,
Matt
Sounds like the Pre-Cat in the front Y-pipe has worn out. Fairly common problem. Try to get as close as you can to it. Should be self evident if that's where the noise is.
Someone else told me about the fuel line doing this...and that there was a fix for it...I have the same problem.....a clacking or clicking noise...like something is hitting something on the passenger side...I cant hear it well when I get out of the car though...and it dissapears while dirving.
6spd.89...I saw you replied to my same post. I have the same thing going on. When I am driving, I don't really hear it but sometimes when I am in park (usually after driving for awhile) it will kick up and start ticking a little. It's kind of embarrassing when people are checking out your car and it starts ticking. :(
I am going to take mine to let a couple mechanics look at it this weekend and I will post it if they have anything smart to add. :D There doesn't seem to be many guys around my area that know much about Vettes.
I did have a mechanic from my local Chevy dealer listen to it and he said if it is a lifter sticking you can still drive it but you shouldn't let it go too long.
I had the same problem with my 92 Coupe. There is a Chevey retrofit kit to correct the problem with the fuel line hitting the inter fender on the passangers side.
I can get the part # for it on Tuesday from the people who maintaine my 92 if you would like it.
I had it installed about two years ago and no more noise.
Hey Matt
Try checking the hood, i had the same noise about a month ago, my pass side of the car, i only could hear it when i was in the car, Fix it the other day,
it was a hood gulde pin lose.
hope that help
Thanks i will check my guide pins as well!!I think i found it!!
Slid under the car and beat on the pre-cat with my hand and
the noise got worse!!! I can make it sound like whatever i want.
But ,now how to fix my pre-cats from this NOISE???
I also am gong to check the fuel lines as well that another member
had posted. Anyone fill me in on how to eliminate my noise situation,if its just the pre-cats???
Matt
The saga continues!!!! Jacked up car and the clamp on the exhaust was
loose! This was just past the pre-cat,it is holding a 1/2" tube that runs
to the main converter. On top of that, the heat sheild in the same area
was missing a screw and moving around as well. I do believe that between
these two that the noise will be gone!!
