Default Temp Gauge Reading LO

I have a 1984 C4 L83 that reads LO on the temp gauge, the dash has been redone as all other gauges work fine. How hot should the oil get? I've changed the sending unit on the the temp. gauge, filled the radiator with coolant, still the gauge reads the same. Any Help !!!

hm. 84 L98? did you swap the motor?

the "sending unit?" does this mean you replaced the sensor? If so, which one?

There is one on the head (left, IIRC on the L98/L83). The other is the fan switch on the intake manifold... I donno where that is on the L83, tho.

LO tells me that there is something amiss with the circuit. You need to trace that wire back.

Make up my mind. Are we talking the water temp readout or the oil temp readout? Where was the sending unit you replaced? Who did the engine swap and what year is the engine? Did you keep all the sensors in the original positions, as standard, for that year engine or did you place them according to the engine that was removed?

There are temp sensors and switches in the left head, right head, intake manifold and the left side of the block.

Sorry for the confusion, the engine is a L83. I changed the senor on the left side of the block. When I first start the car up, my oil temp reads LO until it wrms up, then it reads oil temp. My coolant temp. reads LO , but never reads any temp. after driving. Hope this clears it up. Thanks for the feedback.

I need to know the location of the senor that controls the temp. gauge.

Thanks

WATER TEMP, RIGHT?

The oil temperature sending unit is low, in the left side of the block, at the rear, just above the oil filter. The IP (Instrument Panel) water temperature gauge sending unit, is in the front, of the left side cylinder head, between the #1 and the #3 spark plugs.

He said, "When I first start the car up, my oil temp reads LO until it wrms up, then it reads oil temp." That leads me to believe the oil temp is working.

Then he said, "My coolant temp. reads LO , but never reads any temp. after driving." which leads me to believe it is the coolant temp gauge that isn't functioning.

It was the following post where he said, "I need to know the location of the senor that controls the temp. gauge.", that reopened the subject of which sensor. Even so, I answered the question for both sensors.

Neither of these senors have any interaction with the computer. So stock engine or not, with or without the computer, these are not reasons for either of these gauges not to function.
