Default 95 Engine Intake

I have searched the forums and haven't found anything on this. I am looking for an aftermarket air intake. I am planning on increasing the airflow in/out of the engine with new mufflers, high flow cats, and an air intake (Possibly headers if I have enough $$$). So, do you all know of any? If I can't find any, should I just get a K&N High Flow Air filter (would it help)? Thanks.

Ive heard that these LT-1's don't really need intakes because they already have really good intakes from the factory.

Maybe just go with a K&N filter.

Also cut open the air box lid.

There are other options:

Triple air intake (Claw) = No difference in power than the cut lid and K&N.
License plate Ram Air System = Expensive and people worry about water getting in.
Vortex Ram Air (Cold Air Induction) = I have heard that this is made cheap and crackes.

Most would agree that you are probably better off saving money and cutting the lid.

First Off, Thanks!

As for this project, I have some things to be considered.... The license ram air is out of the running because the risk of water, and the vortex is out for the bad reviews on quality. Also, I want the engine bay to look clean, so I am down to three choices.

#1- Go with the Claw, and keep the engine looking the clean and have a modified look.

#2- Just put in a K&N Air Filter.

#3- K&N Air Filter with cut Lid.

Here are the questions-
**Will just outting in a K&N Air Filter give me increased performance?
**Is the Claw well made (not cheap as to not brake)?
**Do You all think (opinions here) that the cut lid causes the bay to look bad?

I don't believe in SOTP measurements and my car has never been on a dyno. I can only tell you what most others will say and what I believe to be true.
The K&N will only give a slight improvement if kept oiled and clean. I found a new one on ebay for around $30 if I remember correctly.
I have not heard anyone complain about the quality of the Claw.
I think the cut lid looks pretty good and can not easily be seen anyway. The hood makes it a little difficult to see it unless you are leaning over the engine more. The K&N will work a lot better with the cut air lid.

I would have bought the claw if it had a performance benefit but since the cut lid is the same I chose to save the money and spend it else where. Mid America sells a lid already cut if you dont want to attempt it yourself. I did mine using a small dremel tool with a circular cutting blade on it. First I had to drill out the rivets on shield that is attached. I used a different grinding attachment to smooth out the rough edges. A small brush with some black paint will cover any new metal exposed. Maybe I can get some pictures. If done correctly it looks almost like it came that way.

I contend that the SLP Claw flows more air and has sotp difference over the 'cut' lid and K&N. The filter fits so badly that I scrapped that and went to the claw. The flow physics of the design are far superior to stock intake. The folks that disregard the SLP piece have never tried one.

It makes the engine sound like an F-16 at idle. Changes the Corsa note deeper. I put baseball cards in my bicycle wheels too.

I had the SLP 'Claw' intake and was not impressed with a huge performance (or noticeable) difference. The quality of it is first rate, but I just don't think there was a difference performance wise.

There is another option out there: The TPIS airforce reverse filter housing, if they still sell it. It basically turns the filter and intake over so that it draws air from the same area that the radiator does (a high pressure area at the front of the car).

If you want something that looks good and sounds good, then the Claw is for you. But it wont do anything more than a cut lid with the K&N. Its not a real cold air intake, and the surface area of the 3 filters is basically the same as that of the stock filter.

Depends on whether you want to spend that much money for looks.

So, the K&N wont give me anymore than about 3-4 hp?

A cut lid is NOT the best intake for the car. Unfortunately with the limited aftermarket support for c4s there's not very many options that are bolt-on.

With regards to the claw.... if it creates a whistling sound I really doubt it's a good thing. Take a vacuum and turn it on while holding the end of it. restrict the size of the hole with your had and voila.. it is louder and creates a whistling sound. I'm not putting down the Claw I personally have no experience with it. But perhaps this is why when there was a dyno test it actually lost a little hp on a fee dyno runs ?
