More Exhaust Questions
If I decide to put on headers, 1990 L98, the exhaust goes into a "Y" pipe into the cat.
It seems to be a waste of time to go through putting on headers only to run a "Y" pipe into a cat.
So, I have questions.
1. To go straight dual, do I really need those high flow cats for $300 each, or since I'm going from one to two cats, will two standard ones work? That would essentially double the flow, right?
2. What's the tube for on the cat? Do I need to get another one with a tube
3. "X" pipe or "H" pipe to balance the pressure? Why?
Thanks, I'm sure you guys are sick of these questions. So thanks in advance.
I'd get two smaller cats from Random Tech if i went that way. You wont need two L98 main cats if thats what you mean, bullitt cats would be called for with duals. LT1 cats would work, since it all needs to be fabbed anyway.
Its the AIR tube from the pump, you should just delete the whole system if youre using headers, if you can in NJ.
X or H pipes reduce resonance and change the power curve slightly, similar to extending header collectors, they tend to bump the low end a bit.
Be careful. Check with some cooler knowledgeable heads in NJ. You don't want to run afoul of inspections every two years or so. Maybe the best thing to do is check with a muffler shop for their advice re what's allowed. Then you can go the two smaller cats, y, X, H, pipes, etc. More research (check twice, cut once).

Yes, I'd definitely go with dual cats. If you don't, you wont have a true dual system. If it'd help, I've got two brand new 3" universal cats. They're not quite as small as bullet cats but not very big either. They'd easily fit just past the headers (next to the trans) on a manual car but not on an automatic. If you have an auto, they'd have to be located beyond the tranny. PM me if you're interested. I don't have too much in them and so I could let them go cheap. They also have air tubes on them which come blocked off but could be opened up if needed.

I have an auto. Is the exhaust hot enough to make a cat work beyond the trans?
WIll the bullet cats fit right off the headers on an auto?
I'd love to pick up a pair, if I could.
Are there cheaper ones than random tech? Is it worth the $300 per cat for the RTs? Seems like an awful lot. Are there any cheaper ones that will work?
