Car has been running like crap so I'm going through things again and I find this green wire behind the distributor. Does anyone recognize this? It doesn't seem to plug into the egr unit anywhere.
If you want to make the motor run better, try hooking up those loose spark plug wires
Good idea Dan, but I plan to powder coat them first.
"Maybe there is a piece of the EGR harness missing."
It almost looks like the back part of that top tube should have a connector on it.
The only problem is that wire was never hooked on there--I checked early photos from when I got the car--so that isn't the problem as far as the way it is running.
Is it a wire or a vacuum hose/tube. If it is a vacuum hose, put a block/bolt/screw in it and see if the engine runs better (just a test, not permanent). Looks like its ERG related.
The only thing around there that would/should have a single barrel conector is the EST, but that would/should be on the other side of the distributor??? That EGR switch it is laying on should have a dbl barrel conector in it but i cant see/tell if it is there from your pic. Has any-one done any mods to the wiring around there that you know of? Maybe they Tried changing the wiring of the switch? This one has me WAY curious.
I just remembered the EGR temp switch(mounted in the cross over tube from header to the intake) would have a single barrel conector and could cause some limited drivability issues if disconected. Is that all hooked up?
If the EGR switch is the unit that sits on top of the air intake on the '85 under the plenum, it does have a small wire (maybe some kind of temp sending wire since it has a ceramic end).
Anyway mine is plugged in.
I got a mirror and looked at the top tube of that egr module and it looks like it has a connector in there.
I will eventually try hooking that up but I know that isn't the main problem. I haven't had any time to dig into it though.
Well I found a single wire connector that fits that green wire connector perfectly but it is a black wire--isn't that a ground?
Tried hooking them together but it didn't seem to help anything.
I believe it is for the EGR pipe temp switch located on the ugly egr pipe. The temp switch should be screwed into the top part of that egr pipe and have a single barrel connector running off it.... good luck

That black wire with the plug fitting the green wired plug is NOT a ground.
It is the above mentioned egr temp. wire that has a fitting which screws into the egr x-over pipe.
on an '85 the egr temp switch is mounted on the egr valve under the plenum
that is what that connecter is for, if it was unhooked you should be getting an egr code

That could be it--if this is an egr pipe then I don't have an egr pipe so that would explain the extra wire.
Anyway the car is running fine and no codes so I'm not concerned about the wires.
