Default Voltage Meter Bouncing Around

Hello. On my '93, the voltage reading bounces wildly around at idle or low speeds. When I'm at higher speeds, such as on the freeway, it does remain constant right around 13V. Is this the alternator that is getting ready to give out? I know the battery probably will need to be replaced eventually as it's been dead on a few occasions when it's not been driven for a few weeks. Although recently I've not driven it for a couple of weeks at a time and it's started right up. Any thoughts?

I would have someone watch the voltmeter and start wiggling wires and connectors to see if you can induce anything to happen. Other wise the voltage regulator could be going out. Don't forget about the battery. I have seen some strange charging symptoms in hot climates when batteries develop internal resistance.

It might also be a good idea to use an external voltmeter to check the voltage to makes sure it is not just a measurement problem. Good luck.

Thanks for the tips! I didn't think about the voltage regulator. I'm starting to think the batter is OK though as I've had no problems starting it up after not using it for 2 or 3 weeks. It has been hot here, but the same thing was happening earlier in the year when it was not hot.
