I recently had my car, 1988 Convertible, at the shop for some work. While it was there I asked if they could put in a new light bulb in the rear center brake light. Only the right side of it is lit. They said that the dealer now only replaces the whole unit. Since I've never replaced a bulb there before, what do you recomment, replacing the whole unit? or replacing just the bulb(s)? And if it's just the bulb(s) how difficult is it.
???? If we're talking about a CONVERTIBLE there is only one bulb in it. You can access it through the license plate. If you are talking about a targa coupe, on the rear hatch, I'd replace the bulbs.
The coupe has 4 lamps in it and it is very easy to remove the stoplight assembly and replace the lamps. You need a torx bit and a phillips screwdriver.

but the bulbs are about 10.00 each. 40.00 worth of bulbs, wow, but what do you do?
