Thanks again dood. My overkill mechanic insists on me getting gasket paper and re-seal it. I'm not too crazy about this seeing the 36 and 44 BOTH DO NOT use a gasket. We'll see. LOL It'll be Him re-doing it if it leaks again.
Slightly off topic.. I just spoke to Gene(Forum name Karshop) and He's a first class guy. I'm re-doing all my yellow lettering to white style newer lettering this winter. He's got some nice stuff!
when i put in my 4.09 gears (bought a whole pumpkin) i did not use a gasket.. only rtv.. no leaks no problems.. didn't drill a drain hole, would rather not ruin the integrity of the cover..
Would the gasket paper be a bad idea? I know there are literally thousands of Vettes without gaskets. See what working on Fords(My Mechanic does this for a living) does to your brain? Hehehee.
JD,
While he has it apart, you might want to get the GM Snap Ring kit (GM P/N 1407-9465) and check the play in the side yokes. Mine have about 1/16"-1/8" play after all the track time I've done. He just needs to go to a thicker snap-ring to take the play out.
It is a factor of wearing the clutches down in the rear, and it allows those stub axles to move a little. You can really notice it if you jack the car up and, holding the wheel (drivers side) at 10 & 4 push in with your left arm. There should be no play at all. Even if you don't feel anything, I'd have him check it while it is apart. It's too easy while it is out of the car.
And another item you might be interested in are some hardened yokes. Since you drag race, it is almost a given that they'll fail sometime. You can get them at Tom's Differentials http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/cat29.htm for $125/ea. Some good insurance. Tom's has some really nice stuff for the Dana 36's & 44's. I'm getting ready to order a complete hardened/shot-peened assembly from him. With the 427 SB and 750+ HP on tap, I don't want to worry about the rear end blowing up on me.
