How do I determine the gear ratio and rear end I have? Thanks.
Without exception the ONLY ratios I've EVER seen in 89's have been 3.45:1... 3.33's were only in 1990's as far as I can tell...And 3.54's are ZR1 gears. The early 44's in '85 and '86 occasionally had 3.07's but that ratio is much more common in Vipers.
The ratio is usually stamped into the bottom of the diff case as well while some early ones had an aluminum tag with the ratio on the drain plug. Another way to simply tell is to jack up the car, mark the driveshaft and a tire. Rotate the tire over one revolution and count how many times the driveshaft turns.

I have an early 1989 Z51 6-speed RPO GHO. My original owners manual shows that code to be 3.54. Seems pretty definative. Apparently later in the year the GT7 was used at 3.33 making 1989 a transitional year for the D44 (no pun intended)!

89 is a transitional year, GM couldnt quite figure it out so 3.54s were available in there to start, and 3.33s were there to end it and that carried into 90.

84-88 all got 3.07
D44 wasn't available in '84... '84s had a 36 with the manual trans. 44's came about in '85 with the sticks. My '88 had 3.45 gears.

Yes. It was a relatively rare option. Besides the obligatory "G92" (performance ratio), it carried RPO# GW4. Out of 51547, 1984's built (6,443 with the 4+3 transmission), only 410 were built with the 3.31 gears. It was a 1984, only, option and required the Z51 package. It wasn't a part of the Z51 package (25995 built) but it had to be ordered to get the gears.
