I need some advice/help my brake booster went out yesterday on my 87 corvette and i'm in the middle of replaceing it my problem is one of the bolts that goes to it under the dash is a pain and i just wanted to know if anyone had any secrets in removing it? Its the one that looks to me between the housing for the boot of the booster and the steering column. Thanks in advance for any info.
i'm desperate enought i'll try it where do i put the swivel i tryed about a 5 in extension with a swivel between the extension and socket. it didn't work out like i would hope.
You absolutely need an extension with a swivel joint on it. That's really all you need to remove them successfully.
Another tip, lay something over the opening where the foot well carpet is. This will prevent the bolts from falling behind the carpet panel as you remove them. This sucks because if one falls back there behind the carpet, each time you go to try and reach in there for the nut with your hand, it falls down even deeper as you lift the carpet to get your hand in.
Well, over the years, I've tried prayer, oaths and even offered conjugal visits, but honestly, it usually comes down to a 13mm socket with swivel and long extension!
OOPs - little late - oh well maybe this helps the next guy - Brake booster failures seem to come in clusters here on the forum. For future reference - The metal replacement isd a great option - 130 bucks from hotrodusa, delivered within 2 days.
we've had this discussion here on the forum many times. Things we have found to help - like previously mentioned about 20 inches of extension with a wobbler socket fitting on the end of it. I found that if I used 2 extensions with the wobbler tops,it was capable of bending around and getting to the bolt easily (so the extension setup wobbles at the middle junction between 2 extensions - and at the end with the socket on it. I bought a pack of 7 or 8 wobbler extensions from Harbor Freight for about 5 bucks.
Most important - remove the front seat - that makes all the difference in the world - it's A 5 minute job - flip up the metal clip under the front edge of the seat - pull out the bottom cushion - remove the 4 bolts holding down the seat rack - unplug and remove - now you have lots more working room.
Once you figure out these tricks the job goes pretty easily - took me about 45 minutes - and I've seen chimps more adept at tools that I am!

One last tip, I had the same problem. Switch from a 3/8" to a 1/4" drive setup. That gives you a little more room in that tight space. Replaced mine with one from Autozone about 3 months ago, and it is already shot.
