I am about to start a trans for a forum member (85 stalker)
Ron origionally had a 4+3 that was converted to a th-350 automatic. We are going to do the best 700 I know how to build, and swap it in. My question is:
Does the 4+3 uses the same tail housing as the 700? My gm book is buried in the attic, and I thought I would cheat and post here first. I presume that Ron re-used the stock 4+3 tail housing on his 350 conversion. This would assume that they are in fact, the same as a 700.
From what I can see, it isn't even close. The bushing for the slip yoke installs into the O.D. case. Group 4.317, in the automatic section, shows, "84-90 Y MD8.....8642314 1 48.50 Extension, W/Bshg.". The same group in the 4 speed section shows, "84-88 Y .......14091353 1 246.00 Retainer, RR Brg.". I am speculating from what I'm seeing that the "C" beam is attached to the O.D. case.
The easy way to install a TH350 in a C4, is to use the 700R4 tail shaft housing, with a space/adapter to allow the "C" beam to bolt up with no other modifications. If the original car had a 4+3, it has the D44 diff and the shorter "C" beam. Regardless of the (factory) trans, the front "c" beam mounting point doesn't move.
We are taking a car that was once a 4+3 and was converted to a turbo 350. The shop that did the conversion used the existing 350 pass car tailhousing and reworked the c beam to work with the non vette tailhousing.
Now we are converting the 350 to a factory style 700r4 install.
I thought it possible(when I first inquired) that the 4+3 and 700 had the same tailhousing when they left the factory. I now know they are completely different. Thanks for the info
