accel manifold?
hey, i was hoping to get some input. i saw in mid america they have something called the Accel super ram manifold, does anyone have any stats on what this really does?
i know edelbrock sells some similar stuff, and obviously i trust that name a bit more. anyone know anything about theirs?
what sort of gains do they give, anyone have any before and after #s? what, if any, additional work is needed to see results?
thanks!

The super ram is the shiznit.
It's pricey, and if you check around, it can be had used for about $1000. Used, in my opinion, is the way to go... that means someone has bugged out the vacuum leaks.
It's worth quite a bit of top end power and added RPMs.
Someone will chime in with stats... but it is a good piece.

A better base should be worth about 20hp or thereabouts.
All of the aftermarket bases flow reasonably the same, so just find whatever comes up cheapest. Its best to just watch Ebay.
Edelbrock makes the TPiS base, TPiS just ports it a bit. Accel is just as good as TPiS.
To really see the results come in, you have to go with the full Superram (plenum/runners) or larger runners and a ported plenum. All made by Accel as well. TPiS sells a modified set of AS&M runners, Edelbrock sells a set, SLP sells a set. You may want to look at my website and run searches in the archives of Tech.

I thought you might want to see what the SuperRam Plenum looks like compared to the stock 1985 plenum.

The Base intake manifold on the Accel has larger runners to assist flow. The tubes for the SR are also a larger diameter and shorter for a more direct flow.
This is an item that isn't much fun to install, but well worth the effort.
As for cost, Jeg's sells the intake base for $517.99 and the runners and plenum for $779.99. So for the total package you are looking at $1297.98. You can run the base with your stock top end.
Mid America sell the BASE only, not the Accel runners and plenum.

Its cheaper used. Its going to be expensive no matter where you get it, but if you watch ebay you could get a good deal, though I usually see a full SR system going for $1000 minimum even there.
I agree, go used. There's no reason to buy a new setup, unless you're pressed for time and a used one isn't available.
I purchased a new SR plenum + runners off ebay for $600, and a used mildly ported SR manifold from another CF member for $250. This wasn't done all at once; it was over an 8 month timeframe.

Even if you wanted to buy a new SR, I doubt that you can find one from a dealer. Accel is totally out of them and the earliest that they will be available from Accel is 6 months
Apparently they are having vendor issues again.

They are all pretty good! I put the TPIS base on mine and some Large Tube runner's and Holy! Cow! what a huge difference from the stock set-up! Absoloutly sweet. Do as Vader suggested and keep an eye out for the manifolds and runners in the for sale section here and on Ebay! Happy hunting you will not regret buying and installing the unit on your Vette!
Thanks,Matt

I too have the speed density unit on my Vette. I have a ported TPIS Base and the ASM lg tube runner's. I'm using the stock cam w/1.6 roller rocker's and w/that combo it gave a huge kick in the ***! Totally could feel the power change w/each change or upgrade! but you could go with another cam but you WILL need to do a custom tune on a chip for your computer!

SD doesnt adjust quite as well, but I would wait until after install and see if it has problems.
Cam choice wont be dependent on whether its SD or MAF. If its TPI then it should be something like Accel 211 or TPiS ZZ9. And once you change the cam a computer chip will be necessary.
You may want to wait and install it all at once.

How radical/tame or those cams? Im wanting something with little more kick, but nothing to where i cant drive it on a 250-300 mile trip if ide like.
Also...is this a roller cam? Im running the GM Goodwrench 260hp crate engine. Will it work where the engine has hyd cam?

These cams are hydraulic rollers and pass emissions and will do just fine on long trips. Quite tame. If you have hyd. flat tappet you can find several with similar specs to these from the major manufacturers. Accel 212 is a flat tappet made for this.
thanks for the suggestions. Im trying to find someone who sells those cams. Should i expect a big kick with new cam and eldebrock hi-flo intake?
Also plan on going to a 355 gear since im runnning a 2.73 now
the cam in the crate engine doesnt seem well suited for the TPI system
