It could be both, the alternator maintains the voltage and is not working but it may have failed due to a bad battery. If the battery has a bad cell it will be loading the alternator excessively creating additional heat which will eventually cause the alternator to fail. Have the battery and alternator checked, most places will check these parts for free.

Did you get a low battery light on the dash? Clean and tighten all battery and alternator connections. Charge battery overnight. See how it does. Battery shouldn't be bad in two years. It could be alt. or bat. but unlikely to be both.
