You finally convinced me!! I'm going to convert my 84 AND my 79 to tuned port using the MegaSquirt II ECU!! I just got my first TPI (from an 85) today and noted 2 sensors in the front of the manifold. One obviously is the water temp sensor. The other goes into the #2 intake port. I do know that the MAT is under the plenum. SO what the *%%^* is the other one in the front of the manifold?

Send me an email and I will send you the exploded view pages from the counter book. I need something I can attach them to.
WELL DUH!!!! I went back out to my shop and stuck my finger up the hole again.... WRONG hole!!! the sensor is in the water jacket NOT the intake port!!! Gawd I hate getting old!!
Sorry for the false start guys!!!! But you know how us Crossfire guys are.... lol
That exploded view is just what I need.
If you don't mind just email it to me at kjones at eurekanv.org

I have a bridge for sale in New York... cheap! Who the heck sold you on the expensive, time consuming, sideways, performance-wise, exercise in futility? Neither car is going to see a gain in performance.
On the other hand, perhaps I don't belong here. My numbers don't match, I can't run in the 11's and I can't post a huge list of 'mods'. hahahahaha
I'm just an old guy who enjoys tinkering and driving his Corvettes. (my first one was a 58 and I've been hooked ever since)
Vinnie is right! I will tuck in my horns, take a seat and enjoy the company of others who are not so critical. I have enjoyed the forum since 1999 and the guys I have met here who are willing to share their experience and knowledge!
That's what I get for asking the question I guess......
I'll get my a$$ off here and not bother anymore.
My sincere apologies to all.
Ken
Don't get all discouraged or defensive. I am trying to help you here, to see if your course of action was well thought out. And to see if it will allow you to achieve your goals. Your opening comment didn't sound like one of conviction, but more like you had been sold a bill of goods, by some misinformed do gooders, and that you recklessly embarked on an ill advised course of action.

In fact the stock TPI will provide little to no performance gain over the '84 Crossfire or '79 carb. Technologically, the TPI is a minor up grade over the Crossfire and a leap ahead of the carb and the analog controls for the operation of the L48 or L82 engine in the '79. Most of the cars on here won't run in the 11s, and there are probably more cars that have nothing more than some of the "free mods" than those that display a list. I'm sorry if I upset you, but there is no need to be so thin skinned. Enjoy working on your cars.
Kjones, first you have to take others comments with a thick skin.
Second, I have done what you are planning already.
I bought a 84 crossfire car and converted it to Megasquirt, the improvement is 10000% better. I am not using TPI however, instead I am running aluminum fastburn heads with a marine dual plane and port injection, 1000cfm throttle body to top it off.
The crossfire ran great, but its just too old of a tech to deal with a modded car. The MS give you closed loop wideband control, and great tunability.
I have done half a dozen megasquirt cars, it is an incredible engine managment system that is cheap, it will catch on someday soon.
If you need any help at all let me know! Good luck!

My issues are with the TPI and not with the MegaSquirt II ECU. The stock TPI manifolding doesn't offer any more, and maybe not as much, potential as the Crossfire manifold. It IS the manifold that is the obstruction and the objection to either of Chevy's early TFI performance cars.

The L98 was made from 1985 through 1991 in Corvettes. I don't have the figures, but the output evolved during those 6 years. The 1984 Crossfire had 290 ft.Lbs. of torque at 2800 rpms. I don't know if the L98 had a torque rating as low as 290 ft.Lbs., but I'm sure it was never rated, max torque, any lower than at 2800 rpms. The Crossfire is a decent "stump puller".

Here are a few numbers from Chilton (They took them from GM published data). I am skipping years until the data changes. Obviously the data is stated at varying RPM's but gives some idea.
Year HP TQ
1984 165@5200 210@2000
1987 230@4000 330@3200
1988 245@4300 340@3200
1992 300@5000 330@4000
1996
That covers the standard engines for the C4 year range.

Another testimonial as to why the Chilton's manual is only good for a wheel chock. I can't speak for all the entries (I deleted the non subject LT1 listing), but the 1984 posting isn't even close. The correct numbers are:

How the hell would you get a stock (other than mine) Crossfire to 5200 rpms, for a maximum output of anything, except maybe laughs?
