looks like one of my pre-cats is hosed, running real hot & smoking. I'm going on vacation for a couple weeks and when I return going directly to Carlisle. Other than the smell and little smoke is it ok the drive the car, or is there a danger of more damage. car is 86 coupe.
The pre CAT running hot may be a symptom not the root problem, I'd diagnose it first. If the cat does fail from overheating it could cause loss of power or even cause the engine quit running.
It is your call of course but I wouldn't chance it, if you are lucky it may be something simple. A misfire can cause the CAT to run hot, does it seem to run okay?
I read a big informative poster at a muffler shop recently, and it said that if your precats/main cat fail, that it is an engine problem...not a cat problem. Whether it's true or not, I don't know, but it's definitely something to think about.
I'm flying on vacation, but when I get back the drive to Carlisle is about 400 mile round trip.
If you can deal with the mpg loss, but if you know its plugged then you should fix it first. You can order a front Y from the catalogs and have it waiting on you when you get back.
And its not necessarily an engine problem, they will eventually plug up or break no matter what.
Vader86 is right that CATS do eventually fail with age but be sure you do some diagnosis before replacement or you could damage the new one if it is an engine problem.

I ordered a new "Y" pipe and will try to make an appointment with my mechanic so that I could get it fixed Thursday before I leave for Carlisle.
By the way my mpg is about 14-16 street and about 23 on the highway.
I do have a slight hesitation on accelaration, but otherwise the car runs real good. The car only has 31k original miles, and I just had a full tune-up done by County Corvette back in april. But I think that you guys are right no use taking a chance.
Thank you all for your input,
