Default How to remove power steering pully?

Like it says, how do I do it? My eyes arent the greatest and I cant tell if what goes through the center of the pully is a threaded bolt or not? I can get an allen wrench into it but it does not fit perfectly. Car is an 88. Thanks in advance

I removed the pulley in my 94 but had to use an extractor because the pulley is presure fit.
I am not sure yours is the same but you will need the extractor and installer. It is not difficult but without the proper tools you will not be able to do anything and cause damage.

The pulley is a friction fit. You need the proper puller. It is pulled back on with the bolt and a couple of greased washers or another specialty tool.

The tools to remove the PS pulley are availabe for "loan" from Advance or Auto Zone. Go an borrow one (put down deposit) an pull 'er off. Do not attempt to do this without the proper tools or you are looking at spending some folding $$$.

BIG TIP for reinstall...make sure you spray the threaded hole with
WD40 or some rust penetrating oil BEFORE installing the threaded bolt that has to go inside to press the pulley back on after you get the pulley off with the puller tool. The thread holes rust and strip...even got new reman ps pumps that had stripped holes.Had to take em back to the store.Sometimes you can retap them if they arent too bad.

So before I start the job I make sure (if im using the same pump or getting a new one)the long screw for reinstall of the pulley will thread all the way inside the hole and hold itself in there. If you dont check that ahead of time, and take the pulley off,you may not get the pulley back on.

Btw The puller tool itself has 2 halves that fit around the pulley snout and a smooth metal rod goes inside to push off the pump hole, not thread on like reinstall. As you hold one end with a wrench and another wrench to turn the large nut it pulls it off.Very easy to do.

I found out the hard way that apparently there were at least two different P/S pumps used on the 94s. none, and I mean none of the major parts stores could get me the right one, the pump bodies were all the same but the return (I believe it is the return anyway) tube was the wrong length and the wrong angle. The dealer had to order one based on the VIN.

Here is a pic of Autozone loaner #27031... You will put the split sections around the pulley, along will the stud and "Nut and Ring thingy". The small (inside) edge goes next to the pulley.
Then put the thin metal sleeve to hold everything together. Takes about 20 minutes to pull the pulley. Please note that it is a pressed fitting, no screws or locking bolts...
2nd foto shows all parts in kit. Left hand side shows the "put it on er tool"
