Default mystery problem w/90 vette

A couple months ago I started experiencing a idle problem. It was not consistant only occured once in awhile at stop lights. It then began to stutter when taking off from a dead stop. Both problems occurred intermittently and I could not narrow it down. Then one day after a heavy rain I was driving it in to town and the problem was 10 times worse. It stuttered on accleration and felt like it was going to die at every stop. I took it straight to the shop. They looked at it the next day and every thing seemed fine, except for the occansional rough idle. They began checking the ignition system. Replaced the plug wires, rechecked the plugs they put in a month earlier during a tune up, cleaned the injectors, and determined there was a problem with the prom, so that was replaced also. I got it back and began noticing the same problem. I continued to drive it to narrow down the problem. Then once again after a heavy rain I drove it to work and it began to stutter more than usual. When I got to work it died in the parking lot. Tried 5 times throughout my shift to get it started, before I finally had it towed to the shop. They managed to get it started, but it ran really rough. They ran injector cleaner thru it and it ran normally again, except for the occansional rough idle and stuttering. The shop is stumped at this point. They say they have check the ignition system from top to bottom and find no problems. They are now trying the fuel system but so far everything is reading fine. The shop is mystified at this point, because they are no codes showing, fuel pressure is okay, tested the injectors, plugs and wires are good, got a new emc and prom. Sorry for the long post but I could really use some suggestions to get my ride back on the road.

Could be the IAC. Was that replaced?

Could also be a vac leak. A lot of shops overlook this but I've seen the runner gaskets fail numerous times. Shouldn't be a hard problem to troubleshoot. Sounds like you need a new shop.

Check the EGR sytem! I had this happen on a Suburban I once owned(Before the flippin gas prices went totally out of control! Man gas prices suck!)
Anyway take a look at it it's possible it could be clogged or starting too!

Thanks,Matt

I just corrected the same thing . It was the TPS. Immediate relief ,$50.99 @ Auto-zone. Even a Caveman with a screw driver could install it.

Thanks for all the tips. I have already replaced the IAC about 4 months ago, I was wondering about the TPS, so I'll give that a look. Someone told me to check the converters, has any one heard of a bad converter causing these types of problems?

back in '2000 me and a buddy both bought new camaro's. He beat the snot out of his, and one of the converters blocked up. Car basicly died on the road. Would start, but didn't make enough power to move.. Weird stuff.

He had it replaced under warranty, and got rid of the car.

if u can, check out the march issue of car craft as this problem is addressed by a reader suffering the same problems which i also have started to notice in my 89 its on page 56, they mention a slew of problems ranging from fuel pressure EGR fuel Regulator, and injectors as well as changing the thermostat down to a 180 more specifically check the ohms on each injector as they should all be in the range of 15.8-16.6 ohms across the board. another thing mentioned is the egr selenoid which is seperate from the egr valve which can cuase exhaust leak back into the engine at idle cuasing roughness and detonation at part throttle

"tested the injectors, plugs and wires are good, got a new emc and prom."

Do you know how the injectors were tested? Noid light, resistance, scan tool, etc? If the injector resistance has not been checked, check all of them and post the results.

You ever replace the injectors?

I was was having similar problems with my 90. When I checked on getting the injectors cleaned was told that was a bad year for Vette injectors and they were not worth cleaning.

Also consider replacing or deleting the Cats as mine were shot and needed replacing.
