My '85 needs new valve stem seals and has since I bought it. It was something that I could not see wrong since it drove great and still does. Lately its been burning oil though and its definitely bad valve seals. I know how to compress the springs with the cylinder head off, but dont want to take the heads off. So I found an easier way to do it, but need help.
Ok, so i've got new valve seals for all 16 valves and the o rings. I took the covers off, rocker arms, etc. Took the spark plug out and I filled the combustion chamber with nylon rope, but when I go to compress the springs the whole valve goes down with the spring. What am I doing wrong?
Not enough rope or piston not high enough in the cylinder.
the idea is to have the piston down some in the bore, put the rope in then turn the piston up until it stops. This will mean the piston is pushing the rope against the valve and will keep it from depressing.

Take a 5/8" socket, put it over the valve so it sits on the retainer. Whack it with a hammer (not hard enough to push the valve into the piston) that will break the lock loose. then compress the springs.
It's easier to do it with compressed air, than rope.... just fyi...

After you fill the chamber with rope, you need to turn the engine so that the piston will come to the top. This will compress the rope and hold the valve up for you.
