Out of curiosity, is there a point where too much timing won't gain any more power/acceleration ?
I did read that corvette stock computers can advance timing until it senses knock and it will retard the timing slightly and leave it there. Is this for acceleration or more for part throttle/cruising ??
Yes, too much advace in timing will start hurting more than helping. The stock setting is 6* BTDC with EST disconnected. You can advance it some, I've seen members on here between 8-14* and is according to how well it runs. The ECM will retard timing when it senses knocks mostly during accelerating.
Thanks for the reply. What I'm asking though is say a motor starts to knock at 40 degrees timing. Is it possible that the motor will accelerate the best at 35 degrees? Or will 39 degrees be where the acceleration is best ?
DieL, timing can effect different engine, different ways. Some, like my LT1 like alot of timing, and some perform better with less. The best way to see what timing is best for your car is get it on a dyno and try different settings.
I've seen 42* advance at WOT without any spark retard.
I see what you're saying. I will get it on a dyno soon. SO by the sounds of it.. the MOST timing possible withoug knocking is the best for acceleration ?
In other words... every modified motor is different but do they all want the maximum timing before knock?
Thanks again. Just wanted to triple check that the answers i was getting were exactly what i was after. Reason i brought the topic up is that someone told me people used to tune by advancing until knock and then backing off a degree or two. On the other hand I've heard that its the old-school method and that newer efi controlled motors don't require maximum advance for best acceleration.
Bringing my car into this I've been creeping up the advance slightly and there is still no knock counts so i was just wondering if too much is just that even if there is no knock.
