So Its Just The Computer Then Nothing In The Car Inside The Dash????????
I can't swear to it but the older models such as my 93s have what is called a CCM in the dash, behind the radio. It controls the security system, some aspects of the fuel system, the speedo & odometer and the dash among other things.
Your PCM is locate above the battery as mentioned and does control engine and transmission function. The CCM is located behind the radio next to the firewall on the inside. I know that it stores the mileage and communicates with the PCM.
There are three main computers in the C4. This method started in 1990. The ASR started in 1992. OBDII started in 1996.
The PCM - Powertrain Control Module - this runs the engine and transmission.
The CCM - Central Control Module - it acts as a traffic cop between the PCM and the next computer...
The EBCM - Electronic Brake Control Module - this controls both the ABS and the ASR.
The ASR needs to be able to send an instruction back to the PCM to control throttle and timing if slip is detected. At the same time, the ASR will manipulate the ABS. That instruction is sent over the Serial Data Line to the CCM and then on to the PCM. This all happens very quickly. Can you say, "in the blink of an eye?" Or quicker.
The CCM also keeps tabs on the dash, climate controls, stereo and the security system (VATS).
As stated above, the CCM stores mileage.
The CCM is not modifyable. If it is replaced with a used unit, it cannot be changed - mileage is what I am specifically aiming at. Also, if you get a new CCM, the mileage has to be updated within 100 miles and can only be done at a GM dealership (AFAIK).
