My buddy lost his keys to his 87 and cannot find his his spare.A automotive locksmith said it would cost $400 dollars plus labor to try to make a key.The locksmith also said it might not work beacause of the vats .Does anyone have any suggestions on what my buddy can do.
I would think if he took the VIN # and PROOF of ownership (TITLE) to a GM dealer they should be able to cut a key. I know I've been able to get one cut in an emergency for another car this way. BTW, $400 sounds WAY to HIGH! It only cost me $50 and the guy came to me!
A lock-smith should be able to get him a key for the tumblers for not too much, then the VATs is another story.
You could follow Kale's website and bypass the VATs slowly, as far as I know there were only 6 or 7 different resistance pellet's used in the keys, so post a poll and ask what the resistance is in everyone's key and try resistors of that ohm rating.
It will take 6 minutes to reset everytime you're wrong so allot 1 hour or so to successfully bypass the VATs.
Good luck!
BTW, the reply above mine is a very good idea, the dealer should be able to do something for him.
