Default Dana-44 Casting question

I have a used D-44 that I bought off of e-bay which stated that the car only had 6,400 miles on it.

Upon inspection I noticed a line or crack on the inside surface of the aluminum which snakes itself around the inside of the aluminum across the top side. There appears to be nothing like this on the outside.

Also, on the drivers-side bearing housing there is another line or crack that runs across the aluminum housing from the inside bearing cover to the edge of the housing where it is mated to the side of the pumpkin.

The question I have is are these just ridges/lines that are from the casting mold or are they cracks that have not gone through the housing???

I would input some pictures but not able at the present time.

Thanks

Default D44 castings

I've got both a "NEW" in box D44 housing and a used with the gears etc removed. I could get you a couple snapshots to compare but probably not until Fri or Sat. I've PM'd you an email address if you could send me pics. I can't help you with the "posting" of the pics but I'd be interested to see them.

Most Dana cases (D44 and D36), I have looked at, have internal surface hair-line cracks that don't go all the way through.
They seem to be just on the internal surface.
My guess is it is from rapid cooling during the casting process.

I agree with the above. Aluminum castings can have flashing that looks just like a crack but usually don't affect the casting integrity.
