Hello all, I have an 88 coupe...When I go to my car first thing in the morning, it starts up well. However, after driving around and when the engine is hot, it cranks for a good 6-7 seconds before it fires up. It has NEVER failed to start, it just sometimes takes awhile. Anyone have any suggestions on whats wrong with this thing?
Could be leaky injectors and I was also thinking ignition module but you say it never fails to crank. How long does it sit after hot? If the ECM got to hot it would do this also. Time to rule components out.
With the engine hot, put a fuel pressure gauge on the end of the fuel rail, turn ign on for more than 2 seconds and turn it off and watch how long it takes to lose pressure compared to the same test cold. You may have one or more injectors that leak when hot. Another common cause is a spark module that causes weak spark when hot. Pull a plug wire and bring a grounded wire about an inch from the metal clip inside the boot and crank, both cold and hot and see if the spark will jump the same distance and have the same loud snap in both cases.
Had the same problem with my 88. It would start instantly when cold but turn for 5-6 seconds when warm. Replaced the fuel injectors and now always starts in 2 seconds.
Probably fuel injectors. Hook up a pressure gauge with the car off, start it and notice the pressure, then shut it off and time how long the pressure holds.
