Hi All
I have a 1989 Corvette all stock. I called a parts store to order brakes
(rotors, calipers, pads) and the guy asked me if I had the LT1 engine and heavy duty brakes on my car.
I do not know what engine I have ......the eight # in the vin. is 8 and my owners manual is showing it as a L98?
How can I tell if the brakes are "heavy duty" or not?
Thanks Barry

5.7 Liter (350 c.i.) L98 You don't have HD brakes unless you have RPO J55. Look at the build codes under the lid of your center console. Fill out your profile and people can help you easier.
HD brakes are option "J55". Look under the console lid for your car's list of option codes.
Visually, the HD brakes have 13" rotors up front and 12" on back.
If the front calipers and rotrs look the same as the ones in back, you may have the regular brakes.

Since the LT-1 was not available in your year Vette I would be thinking of using a different parts store.
I don't for a fact know, but my 1984 - 1989 Corvette Parts book shows parts for the LT5 (VIN code "J") for 1989. Also, in the front of the book, where they show the VIN number break downs, they show the "J" in 1989 as a 5.7L, V8, used by Chevrolet. The only other prior years of C4 production that used a VIN code "J" were 1985 and '86, where "J" designated a 1.8L, L4 engine with MFI, used in Pontiac's and Buick's. I looked in the book before I posted. If they never built a 1989 ZR1, they sure were ready to.
That is correct. 1989 was supposed to be the first year for the ZR1, but it was delayed a year.
That is why the ZF6 was developed.
If you take a quick look at the squared tail lights, the date is 1988, which means GM had everything in place for a 1989 release, but it didn't happen.
