I have a 90 L98 with an intermitent idle problem. Sometimes after starting the car it won't idle on it's own, it just starts and then stalls unless I keep my foot on the gas.
Sometimes it will get better after it warms up, but sometimes it gets worse. It seems like an electrical issue since sometimes when it won't idle, I turn off the key and restart it and then everything is fine. Other times it will start and idle fine, but if I shut it off quickly after starting then restart it before it has warmed up, it won't idle.
Could this be a bad IAC? I've already had the ECM replaced last year and it has new injectors too. Can the IAC be removed and cleaned or should it just be replaced?
Yes, the IAC would be first to check. Take the TB off and take the IAC out. Take care of the gasket unless you want to make a new one from gasket paper or buy a new IAC w/gasket, may also want to purchas a new TB gasket. Clean the TB and IAC with carb cleaner and a toothbrush or a small brush. When installing the IAC make sure the pintle tip is no further than 1 1/8" from the mounting flange or damage to the winding may occur. If the problem persist follow the minimal idle steps.
Thanks for the reply - I'll try the cleaning first. If that doesn't work I guess I'll just order a new IAC.
Don't just replace anything that hasn't tested bad. The IAC passages probably need cleaning. go ahead. The IAC could be bad. It could also be your ECT sensor. Instead of just throwing money at it, diagnose it and fix the PROBLEM, not just take stabs in the dark at the symptoms.

Highly unlikely. The EGR is supposed to be closed at idle. If the EGR doesn't function at idle, that is the way it is designed. It isn't JUST because the vacuum hose is disconnected. Also, the disconnected vacuum hose to the EGR won't cause a vacuum leak at idle, because the ECM isn't feeding it vacuum at idle.
