I have a '96 LT1 with 96,000 miles and want to do a tune up. I already purchased a set of NGK Platinum plugs. What brand wires, cap and rotor should I use (stricktly a street driver) and where is the best place to purchase them? What else should I consider replacing when tuning it up? I live in a small town in West Tennessee, (Huntingdon), about halfway between Memphis and Nashville. We do have an Advance, NAPA and Autozone and a (plus of course the internet) for parts sources. I'm pretty much a novice on Corvettes, but trying to learn. I got some reel purdy tools I kin yoos.
I use only accel in my 85 lasts forever, but if you use any premium wires, and rotor and cap. you will be ok, just stay away from the cheep crap, our baby's should have the best.
The O.E.M Packard wires are bomb! Be sure and get the looms and holders for the wires, too, since the engine heat makes them brittle and prone to breakage.
Oh, and don't forget your PCV valve and 02 sensor if your engine has more than 50,000 miles. These are two often-neglected but important tune-up items.
I would go with Taylor Spiro Pro 8mm spiral core wires myself. They will fit, albeit tightly, in the stock wire loom brackets.
I once wrote and submitted a tech tip on changing wires on an LT1, but it never got published in the Tech Tips section. I'll do a forum search to try and find the long post with photos that i posted about the process and if I can find it I'll post the link to the thread here.
