I washed the engine on my '93 today without first searching the forum (I know, really stupid). Cover all that I could see that should be covered. After washing, cranked the engine and let it run for 15 to 20 minutes, backed the car in the garage and cleaned the interior.
1 1/2 hours later, car won't start and sounds like it has jumped timing. Have I screwed up the ?Optispark?? Is this something that will clear up in an hour or so or should I call the wrecker?
Ah my brother, I have done the same....I am now $4,000 less fixing it. My suggestion is go for the optispark and then proceed from there. Also check for any bare wires or spliced wires (thats what got me) Good luck

Sorry for being so stupid but I don't even know where or what the Optispark is. Just bought the car no Tuesday. $4,000.00 to fix something caused by washing the engine?
The optispark is the distributor and it is located below the water pump on the front of the engine. Dealer's usually quote about $750 to replace it. Your year has the Gen I Opti (non-vented version). Sometimes they will dry out after sitting a day or so. You will find hundreds of threads about the opti here on the forum, plus tons of opinions and advice.

Thank you for your reply. I've got a couple of friends coming over and we're going to push it back in the garage and let it sit with the hood up for a day or two, hope it helps. My stupidity is really screwing up plans. It was supposeed to head over the upholstrey shop tomorrow for new carpet.

I know I have a later opti with a 96 but it must be almost bullet proof. When I first got the car the motor was a mess from the previous owner, just dirty as hell.
I pressure washed it several times and the opti never crapped. Then when I did my cam and heads I took the time to fully inspect the opti, the thing looked brand spankin new inside, the bearing was fine, and this with 90K on the clock.
To the original poster, if you have to wind up changing the opti it might be worth while to switch your front cover and cam dowel to the later opti setup. I'm a believer!

Well, it was that much due to mechanics stupidity. They were throwing parts at it before fixing the problem which in turn was fryin those parts so it ran the bill up fast cause they replaced everything. Then in the end it was a bad wireing harness. I got a case of bad luck
In other words, open your hood and look straight "down" below your rubber intake tubing where it meets the rest of the engine. You'll see big black rubber hoses going into a cast metal thingy. That's your water pump. *Between* the WP and the engine block is the Opti (as pictured in the link above. Yeah....it's a *b**ch* to get to, and was probably engineered in the WORST possible location by GM - right with the WP.
