has anyone had to changer their water pump? i have an 85 vette and i would like to know how much of the front of the motor i will have to take off to replace the water pump
I just did this on my '89 for the second time three weeks ago.
Im no mechanic either.
I had to remove the air pump to get the tube that goes across the top of the engine off.
Unbolt the A/C compressor from the support bracket, but dont remove it.
Get the A/C support bracket out ( I also had to remove the belt tensioner, but maybe you can get away without it) There's a funky bolt you cant get to until that bracket comes off.
After that I think the water pump comes right out with some fidgeting.
hopefully im not forgetting anything.
Took me a friday evening to get it off, and a saturday morning to get the new one on.
As posted by clay the air tube goes across the top of the pump and is held down by a bolt on top of waterpump. Mostly hoses and wiring. You just remove the air compressor bolts and swing it towards the L/f tire a little out of the way. Word of caution, the ac bracket is aluminum so retighten carfully. If you overtighten the threaded bosses crack and then its find an aluminum welder and retap or around $50.00 for new . save your self some headaches later, replace all the hoses. Even the "t " one that goes back to oil cooler. getting under that ac compressor on road is nigh onto impossible. new thermostst too. good luck. If youve never thought of this,, i find a digital camera takes removal step pictures worth there weight in dold when i forget "where in the hell did this giggy thing go"
