Default alternator question

What happens if you spin an alternator backwards?
Iv`e seen some pictures of supercharged vettes with the alt. mounted on the crossbar backwards. Im sure they just ran the belt some funky way so it still spun in the normal direction but what would happen if It did spin backwards?
the reason I ask is becouse the BB in the vette is pretty much cramed in there, so mounting the alt on the block and off to the side like normal will be pretty much impossible. Mounting it on the crossbar backwards would be so easy. So i need to find out for sure what will (or will not) work. thank guys for any help

The alternator doesn't care which way it spins. It will charge either way. The cooling fan may not be as effective, but should be ok.

I was able to make all the stock accessories fit just fine, even used most of the stock 350 bracketry.

That's an interesting question that I'd never had reason to consider. It makes sense that it'd work in either direction though, since an alternator produces AC current that is then converted to DC.

You can run your alt in reverse. My supercharging kit came with a reverse flowing fan that was utlized in replacement of the stock alt fan. You may be able to purhcase the fan you need from one of the supercharging companies. This should help with your intended mod.

Blowerworks sells a reverse direction cooling fan for just such an application. And theirs is a very nice unit too - CNC machined billet aluminum. Pricey though at about $200. But necessary if you want to maximize your alternator's life expectancy.

But I think I should mention - the alternators that you've seen reverse mounted are NOT mounted to the cross-member in front of the engine, but rather they are mounted to a large bracket that not only holds the alternator, but also the supercharger itself and the A.I.R. pump (depending on which kit you're looking at).

Good luck.
