Dumb question, but please note this Ebay ad which claims tires had ice pick punctures in the sidewalls which were repaired "and didn't have any problems at all?"
I always thought this was a total no-no. So, the buyer is basically just getting the wheels right? (I could use an extra set and might want to bid. These are a few minutes from my house.)
If it were me, no, I wouldn't use the tires. And, yes, you would be bidding (or I would) on the wheels and the door stops just "come along for the ride."
Just a question: those are ALL 255-45 and are all the wheels then 8.5" wide or all 9.5" wide?
Just added: Yeah, after thinking about it some more, the posts below are wiser. Who knows what the wheels are like if someone would go to the (stupid) trouble of repairing punctured sidewalls? No disrespect intended to your situation, Morgan, which may've been different.
Reputable tire shops won't repair sidewall punctures at all.
The tires look like OEM Goodyear GS-C's and IIRC, they have been out of production for a few years so they are certaily more than "6 months old". Once high performance tires get to be 5 or mor years old, they can get hard as the compounds dry out.
He says the tires are 255/45-17 and that was the 94 and later front tire size and the front wheel was a 8.5" x17. The rears would have been 285/40-17 mounted on 9.5x17 wheels.
Stay away from that deal. Any hole even near the sidewall, a good tire store won't patch them. There are some good deals on NEW tires on Ebay but take a look at "the tire rack" at www.tirerack.com
Thanks for the replies, which confirmed my beliefs. I just spoke with the seller, seems like an honest guy whose ad is a bit confusing:
o Tires were 6 months old when he pulled them off the car 12 years ago -- he agrees that they would only be good for cruising/shows etc. (aside -- they would be authentic and probably shine up well, but I noticed that slit too)
o Wheels are the proper set with 9.5's in back and 8.5's in front
o Says the wheels are like new -- he just wanted the chrome versions and stuck them on, then stored these in the garage. I can check them out before bidding.
o He actually did his own patching -- he suspected the tire vandal would return (long story) and he just did not want to spend on new tires. He had moved when he put on the new tires w/chrome blades.
So, it's an opportunity to bid on "new" sawblades which would look nicer than mine and not have to pay for shipping.....................
And then again..... maybe not so bad if in fact it's been off the car and still in great-looking shape! The ability to A) see them first and B) not have to ship them is a real plus, not to mention the fact that they're in better shape than your current wheels and that the price would be reasonable.
The only issue I'd stress with the owner is if, some reason, they don't balance up with good tires on them, he'll refund the dough and take back the wheels. That's an extreme case, and also an extreme "guarantee", but it doesn't hurt to ask.
Look a little further up in this forum and you'll see the probs 96Lt-4 is having with balancing his, and they're his own wheels and tires!
Tell us how it all shakes out and good luck with it.
