i have a 93 vette with the 700r in it with 125,000 on it. it probably isnt going to last a long time with me spraying a 125 shot to it so im thinking ahead about a trans change when it does go. i seen some people put the 4L80e trans in there cars , what is involved in doing this as far as what i have to get other than trans to make it fit in my 93.
I think it also requires modification of your "spine/backbone" as well as modification to your ASR..etc..etc..
The long and short of it is you could build a 700R4 to handle 500hp+ (some people claim 700hp but i'm skeptical about that).. or you could put in a pis*ed off TH400 with a gear vendors overdrive and have a 6 speed for about 3k and keep all your stock programming/ECM and get far supior miliage and strength... but in my book PeteK is the authority on all things C4 tranmission related..

After reading earlier posts by bacardioil about his 4L80E swap,
I looked up Performance Automotive and Transmission Center and
read about their offerings.
Part way down the page here, they state they will soon have what
appears to be a bolt-in replacement for the C4 700R4

At this time we have in development an adapter kit for the C4 Corvette
to replace your 700R4 / 4L60E transmission with the much stronger
4L80E transmission. This 4L80E transmission will be the same length as
your 700R4 / 4L60E transmission making it possible to reuse your
existing 27 spline driveshaft and C-beam.
All that needs to be changed on the 4L80E transmission is the tail
housing and output shaft. The full manual shift model works without a
computer. These should be ready to sell by August 25, 2006 ...
. .
bacardioil has posted some reservations about the strength of the tail
housing and mentioned that he chose a different approach. If he can,
a post with more information describing the differences between TC's
method and the approach used for his install (and perhaps pictures)
would be helpful.

Unless your making 700HP or more, I would keep your 4L60E and have RPM Transmissions, in Sulphur Springs IN, rebuild it to a 4L65E. Talk to Rodney.
I put a 4L80E in my vette, and its heavy and I had to change the 1st and 2nd gear, to get more inline with the 700 0r 4L60. RPM did the work. I opted for the 4L80e for future twin turbo settup.
The 4L80e Comes Factory with a 1st 2.48 where the 4L60e is a 3.06 This will impact your 60ft times hugely as I learned last year. Coan and Rossler sell gears, which I bought so I am running a 1st 2.75 2nd 1.57 3rd 1:1 4th .75:1
I admit however, you cant hurt it. But it will requie modifications to your stock Torque Arm. The shifter assemble will all work fine, no cutting of the tunnel either.
I am using Bigstuff3 for the Engine and Transmission.
thats a lot of good info gents. thank you. i didnt think about the gears being different in first and sec. that would have been ugly. looks like i will stay with the 700r and just build it the best it can be. i had the engine chassis dynoed and on the 125 shot, im getting 371 rwhp with 401 rwtorque, so looks like i will be ok if i build it. thanks again for the info.

You do not need a whole lot of "good stuff" to hold up to those power levels. I agree that for you, a mild built 700 makes sense.
