when in rush hour traffic my temp gets up to to about 250 degrees is than normal for a 85 vette i'm driving it daily right now so i have never seen that. i just replaced the water pump on it in the last two days . when i open the hooh the top rad hose is smoking i smell antifreeze but i do not see any leaks anywhere what temp should the fan com on?
250* is too high. The coolant fan should be on at 227*. If you have access to a scanner, check the reading on the coolant sensor, your gauge may be reading high. There is a fan switch in the right cylinder head that should turn the fan on at 235* if the computer does not do it off the coolant temp sensor. Also turn the AC on and see if your fan even works.
thanks i know the fan works i have seen it running should i change the theromstat
You could test it. If the thermostat weren't opening, the temp would go much higher and eventually burst a hose. If it wasn't opening, it would be slower to warm up, but have no effect on how hot it ran. When was the last time the cooling system had a GOOD flush. I am guessing it is probably about time. While you have the coolant out of the radiator, remove the radiator from the car and clean from in front of the radiator, between it and the condenser. Clean off the radiator, too. You will likely be surprised at what you find. I'll bet that will make it run cooler in traffic. On the highway, too.
After the waterpump did you keep topping off the system till she was full. the overflow tank may be full when you replace the pump but when she burps out all the air she's low on coolant.
it blew the top hose off yesterday evening you i will be changing the thermostat tomorrow morning and cleaning between the rad and cond also and vader i printed of your page and read it
