Default more gear vs torque converter

With all the gear talk I though I should find out what my '86 has. I have a GM1 code which should be a 2.59. Looking for a better launch for street fun. Thinking of 2000 stall TCI Saturday night special and a shift improver kit. Don't want to kill milage or rear end parts with a higher stall. I know you guys have opinions good and bad so lets hear-um. Thanks All!! Bill

I have only uses 2 B&M converters and they were fine. Others I know have had bad B&M's, but my first hand experience with them was fine. I use a local company that hand builds them for me 1 at a time. I am spoiled now . Since using them, my converter problems have gone away. I supply them to myself, close friends, race buddies and forum members. It is a nice feeling to have confidence when I use or sell one. Maybe you have a shop near you that could do the same service for you?

86 has 2026rpm TC already, you do not need a new TC.

I would not touch the rear end, as going to 3.07 is not really worth the expense and you don't want more than that with the L98 automatics. If you got a deal on a D44 with 3.07 or lower, then I would do it, but not otherwise.

The problems I have come across were mostly vibration related. A few tci's cracked the snout of the converter.

you should leave it alone

not worth the expense unless the transmission is being taken apart and rebuilt

I just got my new convertor installed (supplied by Pete via his local source). Awesome, awesome, awesome. I am thrilled with the upgrade....very nice seat of the pants improvement. Thanks, Pete...this exceeded my expectations.

My car is an 85 that has been converted to carb, afr heads, edelbrock intake, longtube headers, 750 cfm double pumper, etc. Pete had the convertor built with a stall in the range of 2600-2800. Gear is the stock 3.07. Again, awesome upgrade IMHO.

I agree with vader, but if you insist on a new converter, I have a Precision Industries Vigilante, love it.

I thought about you last night. I was wondering if you finished the project. Glad to here that all is well. I have yet to have my company disappoint me.

vader, l98 is already into the torque at 2000, right?

c4 for me,
if you do decide to upgrade, talk to Pete K. about sourcing. you definitely do not to have the shop pull your trans 3 times (personal experience) because of crap converters.

I would go 2200 or 2400 stall MAX, and maybe some 3.42 gears....

TCI Sucks gave my TCI Converter away.... just another cheap rebuilt converter thats over priced...

They dont make a 3.42:1 for a DANA 36..... Thats a C5 ratio as far as i know, either way, its probably too much for a stock L98. And id do exactly as Vader says and leave it the way it is unless youre pulling it apart anyway.

Most of the time, I'd say do a converter before trying gears. But with your 2.59s you really need a bit more to get the snap you're looking for. You can find a 3.07 factory third member used very reasonably, bolt it in in a few hours and you'll be quite pleased with the difference. Then if you still want a little more, add the converter.
