Default oil temp

my analog guage reads in the middle which it never has done before and the digital one reads lo?!?! coolant is fine at 205ish.. and both guages seem to work correctly. changed oil like a little under 2000 miles ago.

I'm not sure what your question is.

There are two different oil temp senders, one for the digital display, one for the gauge.

'lo' on the digital display is likely one of three things:

oil temp is below something like 32-degrees F (can't remember exactly what temp it is)
OR
you have a faulty temp sender, which is sending a improperly low signal to the display
OR
The wire fell off the temp sender

If your coolant is 205, your oil temp is definitely not 32 degrees, so I'd check the sender wire and if that looks ok, maybe try changing out the sender. Of course, I can't recall which sender is where and I don't have my manuals with me. It's either at the top of the block behind the intake, or on the driver's side of the block just above the oil filter (PITA to get to).

Yes, the oil temp. sensor is the one on the block above the filter area. The ones behind the intake are the oil pressure sender and sensor.

oil temp is way high only on one guage... the level is correct. it has oil pressure so i am assuming its circulating.so why would it the oil be soo hot and the coolant temp be normal?

Kid: thanks for the clarification!

Prozac: approximately what oil temp is it saying? (middle of the gauge doesn't help me since it depends on what year you have as to the range of the gauge)

That is definitely high for normal street driving. I usually see oil temps like 5-10 degrees higher than coolant temp on my '96.

Since both of your gauges are acting flaky, I'd guess that its something wrong with the oil temp sender. I suppose it could also be a mechanical problem (bad bearing or something causing the oil to get hot), but you'd probably hear that.

runs smooth with no noises.. no performance or drivability difference but the oil pressure gets lower once its really really hot.

There is something wrong with your digital gauge. It should be the more accurate one. My analog may be at 1/4 mark, but the digital says 220* Mobil One can take high temps pretty good.

its motor is fairly new..has about 2500 miles on it. i used non synthetic to break it in and the seond oil change. im planning on switching back on the next oil change. i just went out to drive it again cause it had been a while.. well around town it was in the middle of the guage again aftter it warmed up and when running the hell out of it it got up to about 300*. the oil pressure never drops below 30psi and is about 65 or so when up in the rpms. i can't smell hot or burning oil or anything but that still worries me.. i am going to buy a new sensor tomorrow.
