Not that I WOULD EVER gut my cat since it is illegal, but this friend of mine, yes friend, he has an 86 vette just like mine. He has the front y-pipe off doing some rear work, and wants to gut his cat to flow better through his borla catback. The cat is off the car. I, I mean this friend of mine wants to a)gut the cat or b)buy an aftermarket high flow cat (random tech). Gutting is a lot cheaper. Opinions, directions?
You should tell your friend that he just needs to set it up on end and use a piece of pipe and a big hammer and just pound the daylights out of it. He should pause once in awhile to shake out the debris. Of course, the Random Tech would be better for all concerned :blueangel:
Since you already have it off, you have the hard part licked. Just take a pipe, wrecking bar, wife's umbrella, crowbar, rebar, anything longer than the cat and start beating the hell out of the stuff inside. Be sure and be drinking beer while doing this, it is required.
After gutting a few cats in my life (for my friends only :D ) I've found the best tool to use is a broken golf club. They have a nice soft comfortable rubber grip for your ramming pleasure. I have a friend with an LT4 that wants me to gut his cats in the near future.
Cat is officially gutted and cleaned out. Thanks for the pointers. I have a borla cat back, so would you fellas expect my exhaust to get a little louder?
Backpressure shouldn't be a problem since I am still running mufflers right?
Final question, will my precats clean themselves out now that the backpressure is reduced? I read an email with something like that.
My main cat is gone and has been replaced with a "test pipe". It is a stainless steel pipe that clamps on in the front, and has a flange at the rear for easy bolt in.
I heard tell that someone picked up a used set of cats for his LT...1 and had the cats cut out and a piece of pipe welded in it's place. That way he could keep the stock cats for when he is not running "off road". Those things are pretty expensive. cost for used cats (duals) and modifications, around 50-60 bucks. :smash:
