Try this one on for size... After hard driving and stopping, when I start my 1989 it sounds as if I am missing a cylinder... It only does it at start up and only when I drove it harder than normal... Once I rev it once or twice, it goes away... If I drive normal, no problems... No problems under any driving conditions either... It all goes fine except for the exact situation I mentioned above...
Not an easy problem to figure out to say the least... Any input on where to even start looking??
Pull the plugs and see if you have one that is fouled. You could have a leaking injector that is fouling a plug. When you open it up it may clear up. I would start with plug inspection and then do a fuel pressure test to se how long the fuel pressure stays in the system after the engine is shut off. Also look for sign of oil fouling. Do you get any smoke out the tail pipes on start up?
Air? not a clogged air filter and the throttle linkage works good, right?
Fuel? Need a fuel pressure gauge to diagnose a driveability pressure loss problem. Fuel filter? Doubt that it's clogged, but change it anywhere if any of this other stuff is not the problem.
Spark? Pull the plugs, this'll also give you an idea whether it's 1,2 or 3.
If this helps great, if not, take a couple Advil, post another post in the morning.
Not sure I am being as clear as I should be but in the last 1000 miles it has done this 2 times... Day after day it runs without any problems... I burn no oil, no smoke and no performance problems... I get about 23 miles to the gallon and it runs like a top... To date, this happened 2 times on the same day and that was 100 miles ago... Before and since there are no problems to report... It also only happens at start up with no gas pedal given... Once I start it, when it does it, all I need do is rap on the gas one time and it goes away for good... I am leaning toward the IACV only because it is solely an idle problem so far... If I had to guess I would say a cylinder was simply not being fed but that is crazy talk... I should mention, this was the first day with a brand new K&N filter installed... That is all I can think to add...
OK, you want bizzare. Carbon on edge of throttle blade plus slight expansion of TB due to heat equals slightly open blade at idle. Spring pressure snaps it fully closed when you rev it.
I know, somebodys putting medicine in my cookies. Anyway, it's cheap to check.
