How much faster do you want to go? For me, I figure a full exhaust (including high flow cat and front y-pipe) and a mild 2200-2400 torque converter is enough to get my car into the upper 13s in the 1/4 mile, which is plenty for me and what I do. That would be around $1000-$1200 in parts, up to $1500-$1600 with labor if I don't do the job myself. I'd then spend the extra money on some new shocks, sway bars, and better brakes.
But that's just me. If you're interested in a lot more HP for your $2000, you really should go with headers and full exhaust. If you have money left over you have lots of choices... get a new intake, port the heads, a bigger cam, more gears, and/or a torque converter (or a clutch if you have a manual).
