If your interior lights were shorted, you would have blown a fuse. The interior lights draw several amps and do so with the door open to gain access to the fuses. It is possible that the interior lights aren't the cause of your leakage current which you should measure with an ammeter. Remove the neg battery cable and connect your test meter set up to measure amps from the battery terminal to the disconnected cable. GM says leakage current should be less than 50 milliamps, my 87 draws 27 ma. You have to wait for the courtesy lights to time out before you can switch your ammeter to lower scales to measure leakage current. Pull the courtesy fuse so you can keep the passenger door open and pull fuses one at a time and watch the ammeter to see which circuit is drawing excess current. Also, there are 8 wires with fusible links in the engine compartment (on my 87 they connect to a bolt behind the battery) and these wires need to be disconnected one at a time while watching the ammeter if you don't find the excess current by pulling fuses. You can buy a digital VOM (voltmeter, ohmeter, milliammeter) for $4 from harbor freight or $8 from www.hosfelt.com . You can check your battery by charging it up overnight and leave it disconnected 24 hours and measuring its terminal voltage. Batteries are considered discharged at 12.0 volts or below and fully charged at 12.9 volts and above and linear inbetween. Batteries at the end of their life will not hold a charge overnight.
Check at night for underhood lights, vanity mirror lights, console compartment light, and door panel map lights being on. If you have a radar detector, aftermarket alarm, radio, audio amp, check em.
