I have done 3 orders already with no problems. Seem to be a reliable and good operation. The shipping price is strange but explained in the questions and answers. You have to look at the total price and deside and forget how it breaks down. I will probably use them again (hope not to soon) if I need to.

I'd try a few other places first.

rockauto.com, OEHQ.com, and the forum discount at Superior Chevrolet in Kansas City.

Read their FAQ's.

Also, after their shipping fees it's not really that great of a savings compared to other sources.

gmpartsdirect Never. They tell you they're selling at dealer and whack you Bigtime on shipping!! You'll probably pay less ordering from a local GM dealer.

Rock & OEHQ are 100 times better.

compare apples to apples. figure the total cost w/ shipping. i have found that gmparts were the lowest overall on some items, but slightly more than buying at my local dealer (i get jobber pricing) plus tax. if you consider just the price per part (w/o shipping) gmparts is hard to beat - its the strange pricing on shipping. i always compare several prices on most items purchased.

There are several price structures for buying GM parts at dealers. Four that I know of are list (retail), dealer cost, cost plus 10% (employee), and 25% off list (jobber). At gmpartsdirect you are buying new factory GM parts at actual dealer cost. The derive their profit in the way they compute shipping and handling costs. What percentage profit do you feel is a fair amount for them to make? Unless you have a special arrangement you will pay standard list prices at any GM dealer which will be much higher than the dealer cost price. Employees of dealerships can buy at cost plus 10%. Repair shops and other businesses buying parts for resale can buy jobber at 25% off list price. Probably the best feature about gmpartsdirect is if you know the part number you can plug it in the search box and see if the part is still available. If it is it will display a brief description of the part and the dealer cost price.

I compared GM Parts Direct to Rock Auto and GM Parts Direct was 85 cents cheaper after all was said and done.

I bought my heater core from GMPD and it was brand new.

Nobody can beat their prices(even with the ridiculous shipping and handling) unless they are selling stolen or non genuine goods.

Try to order from a dealer at midnight on a Sunday and tell me how far you get.

My local Chevy Dealer does about the same pricing as GMPD, but they are closed when I'm free, so I have no choice but to go online.

I've used Rock Auto and have never had a bad experience, but GMPD will always be my first choice.

I will never again use GM parts direct. They messed up my credit card (computer problem - charged me twice) and there is NO CUSTOMER SERVICE to help you if you need it. Oh, except the "customer service" email form which for me has been as helpful as a shotgun blast to the head.

Another alternative is Fred Beans . They are very similar to GMPD in their pricing, but their customer service is fantastic. They are also Forum sponsors.... highly recommended!

I would have never thought of that.
The last part I was going to order from gmpartsdirect:
part # 14076924 - $4.28 + $9.95 (shipping)=$14.23
Non-local Chevy dealer (where I don't get dealer price) - $7.21

Non-local Chevy dealer (where I don't get dealer price) - $7.21
GM PART # 14076924
CATEGORY: Rear Wheel Hub/Knuckle
PACK QTY: 1 CORE CHARGE: $0.00
GM LIST: $7.21
OUR PRICE: $4.28
Still a good number and the price has not changed. I have an arrangement with one of our dealers for cost plus 10% so a 14076924 would cost me $4.71 plus tax. I have a GM parts catalog on CD and I usually browse through it making up a wish list as I go checking part numbers on gmpartsdirect.com to see what's still available and what the cost is. I call in the good numbers to our local dealer; he has my card number on file and when a load of Corvette parts comes in their delivery driver brings them to me. How convenient is that? Personally I love gmpartsdirect.com.

If you lived in Winston Salem, NC you could cheat the system. You could order you parts from gmpartsdirect and then drive over to Flow Chevrolet and pick em up for dealer cost! Probably only customers near Winston Salem derive any real benefit from gmpartsdirect due to practical convenience of gmdirectpickup thereby avoiding the S&H markup.

No one company is the answer to all your parts needs. Who doesn’t shop around, I know I do. On the orders I placed, that was the best price I could do at that time on big ticket items. If I could have compared with more companies for better I would have. I hope to pick some names from the Forum and I will check them also. GMDIRECT is just another company, sometimes it works, and sometimes it don’t.
