Default Antenna problems

When I turn off the car the antenna sometimes doesn't go all the way down. Sometimes it does. It stops about an inch or two short. What gives? Do I need to clean the inside or what? Suggestions...
Thanks

There is a plastic ribbon attached to the mast. One side of this ribbon has teeth on it. When you turn on the radio, a motor drives a gear and pushes up the antenna until it stops. When you turn off the radio, the opposite happens. What you probably have is a broken plastic ribbon. The broken ribbon is preventing the antenna to fully rewind itself. If the ribbon in broken, you will have to remove the antenna motor, disassemble it and remove the broken ribbon. How do you check for a broken ribbon? I do not know The good news is a new antenna and ribbon from GM is about $25.
