Default cam?

Hello,
im looking to get some insight on what cams are available and which cam would fit my goals. I'm pretty much an idiot when it comes to this as i am somewhat new to the moding scene. my goals are to have a quick street car. i dont get to the srtip often so i really dont have a 1/4mile time goal. I want it to be reliable in both city and highway if i decide i want to take a road trip(gas mileage not an issue, i didn't buy a vette to be concerned about mileage!) My next question is if i get a cam what needs to be done to the heads? i am starting research now so i can be well educated when i go through with this possibly next year. any help tips and ideas are much appreciated!
TIA!

*car is a 96 LT4*

Your heads flow a decent amount better than LT1's and most use the GM hotcam with excellent results. Most opt for the Compcams CC305 or GM Hotcam because the LT4 heads already flow really good. Heads can be improved but just a cam and a custom tune will be good.

yes sir it is. I'd buy a CC304 for a stock LT1 motor with unported heads and a CC305 for a stock LT4 with unported heads. An over cammed motor kills street manners and low-end torque. I know you want those street manners so I'd say stick with the HOTCAM or CC305. The CC306 is huge for a street car or say daily driver.

The stock springs are just barely good to .525 lift. Personally, I would upgrade the springs with any cam change.

i guess they arent that much more expensive and the extra piece of mind would be worth it. better not be a cheapscate, that way i'll only have to do it once.

You may also want to consider the Comp 503, or something from the XFI line, like the 466 or 467. Spend some time with the Comp Cams Catalog.

I would think you'd want something a little bigger and more modern than the Comp 305 for an LT4, considering the rev-capability of the LT4.

You'll be needing new valve springs for anything bigger than the hotcam, anyway, so why not make the most of it and exploit the lift.

Have you thought about gears yet?

For a near stock engine I like the 466 camshaft, and I would do 4.10 as my first serious mod.

I did compcams 503........

Today I would do CompCams 467 or 468....

LT4 hot cam is still a good choice, but I think a cam from the new XFI line would be todays best choice....

I opted for all new valve train due to higher lift..

Remember a cam is only one part of an overall performance package...

Hotcam, 219 or whatever has under 220-225 intake duration to make a nice streetable cam.

I have a 219 with 1.6 in mine and it has damn nice power and still will get around 23ish mpg on the highway.
